PURGATORY

well it’s a type of transformation!
PURGATORY
My darling, how I should hate to miss my soul’s last flight on high,
To be taken to heaven on angel wings when God’s paradise is nigh.
Thus, when at length upon my deathbed, as some day I know I’ll lie,
I hope I shall be conscious, and well enough, to give him this reply
To his last important question, “Do you on my promises still rely?”
And finally say to him,“Yes my Lord,” in some loving way as I die.
However, should my God then say,“Come, enter my promised land!”
I will bring you with me, my darling love, and tightly hold your hand,
So I can explain this problem, while hoping in his mercy He’ll agree,
You too should enter paradise, my love, to be forever there with me.
“My God, some say she is not worthy to enjoy your eternal love as well,
As she has questioned your existence, and so must now be sent to hell.
Well, I am sorry, my Lord, I can’t join you, if you cast my loved one out,
You see, I must stay to care for her, while she’s punished for her doubt.”
Oh how I hope, in time, my unselfish love will help my loving God to see
The reason I was forced to wait for him, and also ask him to wait for me.
It was so that he could, one day, embrace us both, always – for ever more
Rejoicing, eventually, with both of us, as he opened wide Heaven’s door.
But if I did all this in vain, and to hell’s purgatory you yet were consigned
I’d still descend there with you, my love, lest you should lose your mind.
In that hell, my love, I’d still hold you close, to shield you from the flames
Until God took pity on your soul, and to heaven’s roll added on our names.
So now you must see, my darling, that my burning love for you’s so strong,
I would happily endure any purgatory for you, however short – however long.
AWE
Anton, you took my breath away with that beautiful, classic poem. I think it must be the best one of yours that I have read. At the same time, it’s heartbreaking.
As a father, if your son chose a woman who, let’s say, had no understanding of your faith, would you cast him out of your house forever?
Don’t we all share the same God, although each of us has a different perception of Him? I see God as a mis-spelling, a word that somebody, way back, inadvertantly left an O out of. God is Good. Everybody believes in the concept of good, even if they don’t practice it. Good created the world in all its complexities, and Good’s love is perfect even when we are not. Personally, I don’t believe Good is jealous. I think that, confronted by the saintly agnostic or atheist at the gates of heaven, He would introduce Himself and invite the atheist in for a slice of chocolate cake :), at the same time commenting on how he could understand the man not believing in him – after all, the waters of perception were a bit muddied…
Tell me if you think I’m talking nonsense 🙂 xx Jane

Now here is what I meant in this poem , Jane. I have someone in my life whom I have known for 58 years since she was eight years old. 18 months ago, after many personal family tragedies which hurt her and me , although we have never been lovers but have more love for each other than you would believe possible, she told me she had given up her belief in God after having been a devoted Catholic all her life. I was petrified that she was running the risk of losing a place in Heaven and it really upset me believing what I do. That is why the poem is to her and also explains the only way I can even try to accept the concept of purgatory.I know God loves her, will grant her eternal happiness and I hope with me and all our relations that we love. BUT as she went to Mass for 56 years and then turned to God and told him to get stuffed for treating her the way life did – and it was really awful- perhaps he might ask her to do some penance for this. That would be purgatory. But he would never cast her into Hell for ever. God does not do that to people who ask him to forgive them. If I believed that I would lose my own mind and right away! So the poem is merely a meditation on what a lapsed lover of God might experience, but probably wouldn’t, and how I would do everything I possibly could to make sure she was eternally happy. You see our God is GOOD it’s why I cannot refuse those in need because he loves them even if they don’t know it. (Lucky I don’t charge by the word for these comments 🙂 ) God Bless. xx Anton
